If you’re one of the many Minnesotans enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may have heard that one of the major Medicare Advantage carriers has announced it will no longer offer these plans in Minnesota starting next year, leaving thousands of beneficiaries wondering: What now?
As a licensed Medicare agent in Minnesota, I’m here to walk you through what this means and what you should be doing now to prepare. You do have options—but taking action is key.
If you’re impacted, you’ll likely receive an official notice of non-renewal from your insurance carrier this fall—typically in EARLY OCTOBER.
What This Means for You
During the 2025 annual enrollment period (October 15-December 7, 2025) you will want to select a new plan for 2026.
If your Medicare Advantage plan is non-renewed, you will have a special enrollment window between December 8th, 2025 and February 28th, 2026 to select a new plan option (if you do not do so first during the Annual Enrollment Period). To ensure there is no gap in coverage, the new plan selection needs to be made by December 31st, 2025.
If you do not select a new plan by December 31st, 2025, you will go back to Original Medicare as of January 1st and will be responsible for all the deductibles, coinsurance and out-of-pocket expenses associated with the program.
When your Medicare Advantage plan is discontinued, you will also qualify for a guaranteed issue right to buy a Medicare Supplement without medical underwriting during a special enrollment window.
If you did not lose your current plan (meaning it is still available), and you want to choose a new option, you would have to make that change by December 7th for a January 1st effective date.
